We invite You to the 764th St. Dominic's Fair! July 27- August 18, 2024

The tradition of the St. Dominic's Fair dates back to 1260, when Pope Alexander IV allowed the Dominicans of Gdańsk to grant 100-day indulgences on the day of their founder's feast day. In one of the oldest descriptions of the fair from the 16th century, the papal nuncio Giulio Ruggieri wrote: In the month of August there is a great fair of St. Dominic's, which gathers Germans, French, Flemish, English, Spanish and Portuguese, and then calls at the port 400 ships loaded with French and Spanish wine, silk, olive oil, lemons, jams and other Spanish products, Portuguese spices, tin and English cloth . Circus performers, acrobats and acting troupes also came to the Fair from all over. Various wonders, exotic animals and, apparently, even mermaids were shown.

St. Dominic's Fair was held annually for the next few centuries, becoming an important celebration for the city of Gdańsk. This tradition was interrupted by World War II. It was revived in 1972. And it was then that the rooster became the symbol of the fair.
