Enter the Merchant's Exchange Office and be magically transported to 13th-century Gdańsk!
In the very heart of the city, on Szeroka Street – right next to the famous Gdańsk Crane- the Living Museum of Gdańsk is located, an extraordinary place where history comes alive before your eyes.
The interactive performance takes place in a reconstruction of a medieval merchant’s exchange office – a former office where trade was conducted, goods were counted, documents were stored and contracts were signed. It was precisely in such places that decisions were made about the sale of grain and goods brought from the farthest corners of Europe. Exchange offices were the heart of the commercial life of old Gdańsk.
During the interactive performance, conducted by a townsman or a townswoman, participants travel back in time. The audience gets to know Gdańsk from centuries ago by watching “magical images” – engravings, illustrations come to life. They show what often no longer exists in present-day Gdańsk.
This is not a classic museum – it is a captivating experience that engages all the senses. Participants touch objects that were once traded on Granary Island, some check the weight of amber on a balance scale and try to recognize types of leather by their texture. One can also feel the weight of a real sword and helmet – just like the ones used by knights.
The performance ends with a special moment: everyone mints a commemorative coin with their own hands – a Gdańsk shilling from the year 1457, which they take with them as a unique trace of the medieval adventure.
It is a great place to see what Gdańsk looked like centuries ago before sightseeing the city, and to compare it with present-day reality.
