Tourist, sort your waste – even on holiday! Waste doesn’t take a break
Sorting waste is easy – and important
Even small things like throwing a bottle or a receipt into the right bin can help the environment. When many people do it, the difference is big! What goes into which bin?
In Gdańsk, there are 5 different waste bins:
- Yellow – plastic and metal: plastic bottles, yogurt cups, cans, and drink cartons (Tetra Paks).
- Blue – paper: newspapers, cardboard, clean paper bags. No greasy or dirty paper.
- Green – glass: glass bottles and jars, empty and without caps. No glasses or ceramics.
- Brown – bio-waste: fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells. No raw meat or fish bones.
- Black or grey – mixed waste: things that don’t fit in other bins, like used tissues, greasy packaging, or receipts.
Not sure? Use the app or website
To help you sort your waste correctly, go to czystemiasto.gdansk.pl or use the Czyste Miasto Gdańsk mobile app. There’s a search tool where you type what you want to throw away – and it tells you which bin to use. It’s great for visitors who are in Gdańsk only for a few days.

Less waste? Easy!
Sorting is good – but making less waste is even better. Here’s how:
- Take a reusable water bottle and use public water taps.
- Choose ice cream in a cone instead of a plastic cup.
- Use a reusable bag when shopping.
- Buy drinks in glass bottles – glass is 100% recyclable.
Let’s keep Gdańsk clean – together
Even on holiday, we can make good choices. When everyone helps, Gdańsk stays clean, green, and beautiful – all year round.
