The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theater was built in the place where in the 17th century there was a Fencing School building, modeled on the Fortune Theater in London.

The originator of the reconstruction of the Fencing School in Gdańsk was prof. Jerzy Limon, first Director of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theater (2008-2021).

Equipped with an Elizabethan-type stage and similar to numerous English theaters of the Elizabethan era, it was used both for fencing exercises and competitions, as well as for staging performances. People who regularly came to the Gdańsk theater included: traveling actors to stage plays by English playwrights in Gdańsk - including Shakespeare.

The author of the design of the current theater is the Italian architect Renato Rizzi, who placed the light, wooden interior of the building in a dark brick block, with a unique roof that opens in 3 minutes and allows for performances in daylight under the open sky in the spirit of the Renaissance tradition.

The Gdańsk Shakespeare Theater is a production house. In addition to its own productions, GST presents the most recognized performances, concerts, exhibitions, organizes conferences and educational events.

The theater is also famous for its international theater projects. His programs featured bands from Norway, Iceland, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine and many other countries. The most important event organized by the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theater is the Shakespeare Festival. The International Shakespeare Festival takes place every summer in Tricity and has been organized for 28 years. So far, over 240 different theater groups from over 40 countries have performed at the festival.
